Preamble

The 5-year HKU-Shanghai AI Lab research collaboration has kick-started in 2023 to derive strong, cross-border alliance for research development on artificial intelligence, aiming in breeding new generations of data science researchers and advancing state-of-the-art technologies to foster impactful outputs across disciplines such as engineering, science, education, healthcare, architecture, and more. The Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science is pleased to be the first strategic research collaborative partner of the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in The University of Hong Kong, As a national research unit itself, engaging in forward-looking scientific and technological research in AI, as well as pioneering contributions on original theories and key technologies, incoming students to be recruited under the HKU-Shanghai AI Lab alliance will benefit from the wealth of resources and connections with the Lab, and at the same the academic research support and manpower at HKU.

Goals of the collaboration

HKU and the Lab will join force to achieve the following goals:

  1. deliver world-class research in artificial intelligence
    • knowledge transfer activities to share knowhow on the latest research findings with the academic circles;
    • bring about socio-economic impact and improvements to the community for the field of AI
  2. nurturing young research talents in delivering world-class innovative research outputs beneficial to the community in Hong Kong and the Great Bay Area
    • research postgraduate students jointly nurtured in Shanghai and Hong Kong;
    • faculty members to be stationed in both places for strengthening ties in regional research ties

Quoting from the late Professor Xiao-ou Tang, Founding Director of the Shanghai AI Lab, “[The Shanghai & HKU] collaboration will ultimately work towards building a ‘Whampoa Military Academy’ in the field of AI, a globally renowned breeding ground for outstanding data scientists in both Shanghai and Hong Kong, with concerted efforts in promoting scientific research development in artificial intelligence.”
