Preamble
Goals of the collaboration
HKU and the Lab will join force to achieve the following goals:
- deliver world-class research in artificial intelligence
- knowledge transfer activities to share knowhow on the latest research findings with the academic circles;
- bring about socio-economic impact and improvements to the community for the field of AI
- nurturing young research talents in delivering world-class innovative research outputs beneficial to the community in Hong Kong and the Great Bay Area
- research postgraduate students jointly nurtured in Shanghai and Hong Kong;
- faculty members to be stationed in both places for strengthening ties in regional research ties
Quoting from the late Professor Xiao-ou Tang, Founding Director of the Shanghai AI Lab, “[The Shanghai & HKU] collaboration will ultimately work towards building a ‘Whampoa Military Academy’ in the field of AI, a globally renowned breeding ground for outstanding data scientists in both Shanghai and Hong Kong, with concerted efforts in promoting scientific research development in artificial intelligence.”

Terms of Reference of the Joint Collaboration Committee
(1) Propose amendments to the research collaboration agreement and its corresponding terms;
(2) Formulate development plans and approve annual work plans;
(3) Review scientific research projects;
(4) Review budgets;
(5) Actively participate in the recruitment of faculty members, and research postgraduate student recruitment, etc.;
(6) Other matters requiring the decisions of the Joint Collaboration Committee.
