Professor Ian Wong is currently the Head of Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, University of Hong Kong. He is the holder of Lo Shiu Kwan Kan Po Ling Endowed Professorship in Pharmacy. He is also a co-director of Centre for Medicines Optimisation Research and Education at UCL Hospital in London.
As an academic pharmacist with research expertise in healthcare big data analytics. During his career, Professor Wong has obtained over HK$80 million in research grants as the principal applicant and approximately HK$2 billion as a co-applicant in Europe and Hong Kong. He has had over 450 papers published. According to Clarivate Analytics’ Essential Science Indicators, citations of his publications was listed amongst the top 1% of scholars in pharmacology and pharmacy research for seven consecutive years from 2015 to 2021. In 2021, he received HK$20 million from Research Grants Council and Health and Medical Research Fund of Hong Kong Government to lead two big data research programmes to evaluate the long-term outcomes of COVID-19 and safety of COVID vaccines. Professor Wong has over 450 publications with publication in JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Psychiatry, Lancet Psychiatry, Lancet Infectious Disease, Lancet Digital Health, Nature Communication and BMJ.
In recognition of his work in medicines research, Professor Wong was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and Fellowship of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, British Pharmacological Society, International Society of Pharmacovigilance and Fellow of Faculty of Public Health, Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.
