HKU IDS PhD Candidate Xubin REN Receives HKU Foundation First Year Excellent PhD Award 2025/26

The Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (HKU IDS) is pleased to share that Xubin REN, a Year 3 PhD candidate, has received the HKU Foundation First Year Excellent PhD Award 2025/26.

Funded by the HKU Foundation and administered by the HKU Graduate School, the university-wide award recognises PhD students who demonstrate excellent performance during their probationary period. Candidates are assessed on evidence including publications and other research outputs, prizes and awards, patents, and other notable accomplishments. With no more than 15 awards available across HKU each year, the recognition places Xubin among a limited group of doctoral researchers recognised for exceptional early-stage progress.

Under the supervision of Prof Chao HUANG at IDS, Xubin conducts research across large language models, recommender systems, retrieval-augmented generation, multimodal understanding, and autonomous agents. His work examines how advances in AI models can be translated into practical and scalable systems that support real-world users and workflows.

This latest recognition reflects Xubin’s sustained research progress from the early stage of his PhD and the wider research environment at IDS supporting young researchers working at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence, and practical AI systems.

Congratulations to Xubin on this achievement.
