About Me
Dr. Seongmin Kim is a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (HKU IDS), working alongside Professor Alec Kirkley. Seongmin received his PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard University and his BS in Physics from Seoul National University. He is broadly interested in emergent phenomena in complex systems. During his PhD, he worked on emergent rheology of granular materials with Professor Ken Kamrin. After PhD, he studied entanglement networks of granular particles as a postdoc in the laboratory of Professor Yilong Han at HKUST. His current research in IDS focuses on belief propagation (message-passing algorithm) for performing inference on networks that exhibit phase transitions.
Current Research Project
His current research focuses on belief propagation (message passing algorithm) for performing inference in networks exhibiting phase transitions. The research aims to determine the applicability of the belief propagation method in various network structures and to design improved new algorithms for faster or more accurate computation. This can be applied to predict emergent phenomena occurring in complex systems, such as the formation of public opinion through social networks, cascading failures in power grids, and the equilibrium behavior of spin models such as the Ising model.
