Professor Xiaoou Tang received the B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei (1990), M.S. degree from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY (1991) and Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (1996). He has been a Professor in the Department of Information Engineering in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and also an Associate Director of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Science since January 2009.
Prof. Tang worked as the Director of the Visual Computing Group at the Microsoft Research Asia from 2005 to 2008. As also the Co-founder and the current Executive Director of SenseTime, a world’s leading artificial intelligence (AI) software company focused on computer vision and deep learning with its headquarter in Hong Kong, Prof. Tang is primarily responsible for designing research and innovation strategies for the Company and driving research partnerships with leading universities and academic institutions.
Prof. Tang has been a Fellow at the IEEE since 2009. He was the Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV), one of the two leading journals on computer vision, and a General Chair of the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV). Prof. Tang was ranked as Asia’s top five computer scientists by Guide2Research in 2020. He further received the Best Paper Award at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) in 2009, which was the first one ever from Asia. His work on facial recognition, becoming the first facial recognition algorithm to surpass human performance, was awarded the Outstanding Student Paper Award at one of the most prestigious AI conferences, the AAAI, in 2015. He is considered one of the most influential AI scientists.
